Coding Is Better Than I Thought

Hi Everyone,

My Blog Post for November is about coding.  My mom thinks it's a good idea to know how to do this.  I attended Code Day with Jared Beymer to find out more.

Here's a picture of when I first arrived.  I didn't know what to expect and really wasn't sure...

I met a lot of really nice teenagers who showed me what they were working on and talked to me about coding and why it was important. I learned a lot!

They gave me some tips and resources to look into.  They made coding fun and the day fun too!  I liked the brainstorming and friends I made!  I thought I would be the youngest one there.  I was wrong.  The two boys behind me were my age too.

So look into coding! My mom and a whole lot of other people think it's a good idea too!:)

Hi Everyone,
It's Meridan here! Just letting you know about a cool conference I attended. It was called ISLI and was organized and run by students. ISLI stand for: Iowa Student Learning Institute.

The main organizers were Ian Coon & Jack Hostager. Here is a picture of them presenting:

It was held at a high school and people from all over came. This picture shows the auditorium and Zak Malamed. He spoke about students having a voice. He is the founder of (While I liked his message I still feel he needs more voices from non-teenagers like me!:)

I liked what another speaker Brett Neese had too say too. He talked about following your curiosity and trying new things. Another presenter, Scott McLeod, showed what kids all over the world are accomplishing using electronic media. He talked about not being prefect at the start. The main thing is to start!

They had other great speakers and breakout sessions. One session I attended was completely about using games like Mindcraft in the classroom. Here is a picture of me brainstorming with some other students. It was really neat! I made friend named Jacque. She likes Mindcraft too.

A big take away from the conference was: "Need to prepare them for their future not our past."

Destiny Quest

Hi! - It's Meridan.

Sorry I haven posted anything lately, but this is truly something great!

It's called Destiny Quest.  Here's the link to their site if you want to check it out:    (Not all school libraries have this. We just got ours this year.)

Destiny Quest is a site where you can see what's available in your school library online.  You can go there to look for the books you like.  You can also post a review about them or leave a comment for other people to see.  You can also see if a book is "out" or "in".  --  If it's not in, the cool thing is, you can place a "hold" on it, so you can get it next.

You can also check for a book's lexile ranking.  Lextile rankings are very important.  My teacher gave us our lextile number at the beginning of the school year.  (You may need to check with your teacher to find out yours, if you don't already know it) Your lextile ranks tells you what level you should be reading at and helps you to match up to a book that is a good fit for you.

So, like I was saying, I highly recommend Destiny as an app are on your computer or phone

Until next time...signing out...

Everyone Can Learn New Technology - Even My Mom!

I thought I would do a blog post about my mom tonight.  She is learning about technology and all these great new tools along with me.  My mom isn't very technically savvy, but she's getting better and at least she tries.  Here's a few things she had to say.  See below:

Well, I feel fortunate to have someone like Meridan to teach me what she is learning in school and from her  teacher-librarian, Mrs. Miller.  Mrs. Miller has opened a new world up for both of us.  It's interesting as a parent because you have a perception that a teacher may think that they are only teaching their students, but when it comes to technology their reach is so wide and vast.  Much of what Meridan is learning and using at school is applicable to my life as well.  She is learning and adopting much more quickly than I ever could, on my own, or through a yearly training session.  Meridan laughed when I wrote that (a teacher may think that they are only teaching their students...)  She said, "Not Mrs. Miller!  She knows better than that!"  So I guess I'm not only learning about technology, but also community and the reach technology has given to all of us.

That sums it up for now!  Thanks mom!  -Until next time!

Capstone Comic Contest

Capstone Comics was holding a contest for everyday heros.  I entered my school librarian.

Here's that I had to say about her:

Our school librarian is really a superhero in disguise.  Behind her seemingly normal red hair and headband is someone with astonishing capabilities.
-She is able to shrink the world in an instant using Skype; connecting us with famous authors and students from around the world.
-She has superhuman communication skills using; e-mail, twitter, her blog, the school newsletter, website, & TV channel.
-She leaps over information hurdles with ease & has the ability to save the day with a click of the mouse.

I think you would agree, our school librarian is a superhero!

Results - Mrs. P's National Writing Contest

Hi Everyone,

A few people asked how the Mrs. Ps Writing contest turned out. (Remember when my mom crashed my blog...)  I was a finalist but didn't win the grand prize:( It was a good experience anyway and I want to try again next year.  Mrs. P even mentioned my blog on her website! It was really cool!  These are the prizes I won:

I got a nice letter, with feedback from the celebrity judges, on my story.  It was great that they did that!  (I still can't believe Julia Roberts read my story!!!!)  I've been enjoying the art supplies and Mrs. P book.  I used the gift certificates to buy and donate books to my school library.

I'm still writing and just found out I won a local writing contest.  Now, my story goes on to the state competition!  Here's a picture of me from last year.  I won second place for a poem I wrote:

Wish me luck! A new adventure awaits...
